Researchers from the University of Bristol in England have confirmed that low- and no-calorie sweeteners are an effective tool for weight loss and maintenance. In a paper published in the International Journal of Obesity, researchers concluded that beverages containing these sweeteners aid people in reducing their caloric intake.

“Low-energy sweeteners can help with weight management,” lead study author Paul Rogers, a psychology researcher at the University of Bristol in England, told Reuters.

Rogers and his colleagues analyzed 79 published papers on low- and no-calorie sweeteners including aspartame, saccharin, stevia and sucralose. After reviewing the data they determined that, “Consuming low-energy sweeteners instead of sugar reduces both energy intake and body weight,” said Rogers.

The findings reinforce a 2014 study published in the journal Obesity which showed that dieters who drank diet beverages as part of an overall weight loss program were able to lose weight successfully. These two studies align with decades of research that show low- and no-calorie sweeteners, such as those found in diet beverages and thousands of other foods and beverages, can help reduce calories consumed and aid in maintaining a healthy weight, a position also supported by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

America’s leading beverage companies offer consumers an array of low- and no-calorie options as another way to enjoy their favorite beverages. So, as you look to shed those extra holiday pounds, remember that refreshing low- and no- calorie beverages can help you achieve your goal as part of an overall weight loss program.
