Although some continue to promote job-crushing, unpopular beverage taxes , it is becoming increasingly clear that partnerships, education and consumer choice are the most effective tools to accomplish public health goals. In a recent opinion piece published in the Des Moines Register, American Beverage Association President and CEO Susan Neely highlights the beverage industry’s efforts to support parents across the country by giving them a wider variety of choices for their families.

“America’s beverage companies have heard from consumers — especially moms — that they are looking for ways to cut sugar from their families’ diets. We’re stepping up to help them do this by reformulating beverages to contain less sugar, creating more low-calorie and zero-sugar options than ever before, and inventing the mini-can” Neely writes.

Neely reflects on her childhood summers in Iowa, which always included some sweet and salty treats at the state fair. She recognizes that parents should be able to make decisions about what their children eat and drink, and they should have the resources available to them to make informed decisions.

“We’re not only introducing these new options, but we’re also making sure they are accessible and encouraging consumers to try them,” says Neely. “New in-store marketing techniques are being implemented in beverage aisles, and companies are working with retailers to change shelf layouts to attract consumer attention toward reduced-calorie options and smaller package sizes.”

Of course, offering more beverage options is just one way in which the beverage industry is coming together to support public health. Click the link above to read the full piece and learn more about the industry’s partnerships and initiatives.
