Did you know that about 85% of Americans enjoy caffeine in one form or another each day? Some get their pick-me-up from coffee, tea or other caffeinated beverages. Others enjoy energy drinks for its variety or simply the taste.

For several decades, energy drinks have been sold and safely enjoyed by millions of people around the world and are available in more than 165 countries. In fact, many of the world's leading health authorities including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Health Canada and the European Food Safety Authority have recognized energy drinks and their ingredients as safe for consumption. This includes caffeine as well as other ingredients found in energy drinks, such as B vitamins and taurine, which are found naturally in other foods.

What some may be surprised to learn is that most energy drinks contain significantly less caffeine than a similarly sized coffeehouse coffee. For example, a 16 fluid ounce energy drink typically contains between 160 and 240 milligrams of caffeine, while the same size coffeehouse coffee contains around 300 to 330 milligrams. This means that mainstream energy drinks typically contain about half the caffeine of a similarly sized cup of coffee.

ABA member companies - which represent 95% of the energy drinks sold in the United States - are committed to ensuring energy drinks are safe and enjoyed responsibly. Our companies voluntarily go above and beyond mandatory labeling and marketing practices including displaying total caffeine content from all sources and advisory statements indicating that drinks are not recommended for children, pregnant or nursing women, or those sensitive to coffee.
