Here at Sip & Savor, we often talk about our Balance Calorie Initiative because we’re excited to tell the story of what’s happening in the marketplace to support Americans’ desire for less sugar and smaller portions. However, did you know that the beverage industry in Europe is also committed to reducing sugar in beverages?

In a new piece from Sigrid Ligné, the director general of UNESDA Soft Drinks Europe, she discusses the commitment the non-alcoholic beverage industry has made to, delivering a further 10% reduction of sugar in beverages by 2020.

“Our sector has been on this added sugars reduction journey since the 1970s when the first no and low-calorie drinks were introduced, and we have already reduced calories by 12% since 2000,” Ligné said.

UNESDA and its members are taking on this challenge via several approaches - reformulating existing products, offering more lower-calorie and smaller portion options and innovating the marketplace with new offerings.

We are thrilled to have partners across the globe who are tackling ambitious goals for the sake of our consumers.
