Having fun this summer doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice some of your favorite beverages if you are trying to cut calories. America’s beverage companies offer a wide variety of low- or no-calorie products which provide sweetness and refreshment while reducing sugar and calories. These products can be successful for both weight loss and weight maintenance.

Low- and no-calorie sweeteners are some of the most researched ingredients in the world. Substantial research, including human clinical trials, support the safety and efficacy of low- and no-calorie sweeteners. The CHOICE study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, confirms that low- or no-calorie beverages can be an important tool in helping reduce calories. Additionally, a 2016 study published in the journal Obesity showed that participants who drank low- or no- calorie beverages versus water alone not only lost weight and kept it off, but reported feeling less hungry.

The World Health Organization, U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority have all deemed low- and no-calorie sweeteners as safe for use in foods and beverages.
