Yesterday, a report from Trust for America's Health issued their annual report, “F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future” with predictions on the future waistlines and health of American adults and children. The report’s projection is grim: in the next 18 years, the national obesity rate could rise above 44 percent of the population.

Importantly, our member companies are providing more low- and no-calorie beverages to consumers than ever before, making it easier to watch calories without sacrificing choice and taste. In fact, with the development of more low- and no-calorie options, the average calories consumed per serving have dropped by 23 percent since 1998.

Here are the facts: while the beverage calories delivered to the marketplace continue to decline, obesity rates during the same time frame have climbed sharply. According to the TFAH report, “Twelve states now have obesity rates above 30 percent. Four years ago, only one state was above 30 percent.” All of this makes it clear that beverages do not uniquely contribute to obesity, as their consumption has measurably declined while obesity is on the rise.

Here at Sip & Savor, we like to focus on meaningful initiatives, such as delivering choices to our consumers, our voluntary calorie labeling and School Beverage Guidelines, to make it easier to find a healthy balance. As the predictions for the nation’s weight are studied and discussed, check back with us for common sense perspectives and more on our continued commitments.
