Last week, millions of people around the globe watched gymnasts land their routines in their fight for Olympic glory.  On Sunday at 10:32 p.m. PDT, the scientists and engineers of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) watched Curiosity, the most advanced Mars rover to-date, land on the “Red Planet.”  According to a Los Angeles Times article, Curiosity is a mobile “geochemistry lab … able to vaporize rocks, ‘taste’ air samples and ingest dirt, then send the results of experiments home from 154 million miles away.” What started as a bold idea filled with the American adventurous spirit to discover the unimaginable and send humans to Mars took 10 years, $2.5 billion and 5,000 people from 37 states to accomplish.
