Being physically active is an important component of leading a healthy and balanced lifestyle. As we’re now half-way through the month of May, we thought we’d remind everyone that it is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. First observed in 1983, this national health observance “serves as a great opportunity to encourage physical activity and healthy eating habits, and to highlight the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition's (PCFSN) mission to engage, educate, and empower all Americans across the lifespan to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and proper nutrition,” according to the PCFSN website.

As part of this month-long celebration of physical activity, this week is Bike-to-Work Week – which ends on Friday with Bike-to-Work Day.  Now we recognize that not everyone lives in a location where they are close enough to the office to bike to work and still get there on time – or be safe in the process, but if you can, we hope you’ll consider it.  Here in the nation’s capital, the Washington Area Bicyclist Association has a ton of great information available on its website to help you plan your route.  And there are similar organizations across the country.  Whatever your mode of transportation to the office, we hope you will find some time this week to take at least a short bicycle ride – it’s a great form of exercise that you can enjoy year-round.
