Last year we blogged about the FIT (Fitness Integrated with Teaching) Kids Act, a piece of legislation that calls for more physical activity and education in schools, as well as more education about nutrition and how to balance diets. This week, we're happy to provide an update.  On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed, by voice vote, this important bill. The bill requires local and state education agencies to annually report, to parents and families, information on school health and physical education programs - including the amount of time students spend in required physical education classes.

Designed to encourage healthier lifestyles for children as part of an effort to reduce child obesity, this is a piece of legislation that the beverage industry is proud to support.  And we thank its sponsor, Rep. Ron Kind, D-Wis., for his sponsorship of the bill and commitment to the fitness of our nation's children. You can read what Rep. Kind had to say upon passage on his blog.

Our industry also cares about reducing childhood obesity .  And we have stepped up to be part of the solution by successfully implementing national School Beverage Guidelines, and committing to a calorie labeling initiative in support of First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" anti-obesity campaign.  We can only turn back the tide in childhood obesity by all of us working together to do our part.

Congrats to Rep. Kind and his colleagues on the passage of a bill that will make an importance difference in our children's lives!
