It’s Obesity Week, and America’s beverage companies are doing their part to help fight childhood obesity in communities across the country. One way we do this is by supporting community-based programs that teach people the importance of balance in their daily lives.

The ABA and United States Conference of Mayors (USCM), with support from the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America, issues Children Obesity Prevention Awards to community education programs that help families to balance what they eat, drink and do.

In January, the USCM awarded the following six cities with grants to help enhance and expand childhood obesity prevention programs:

Green Bay, WI Jacksonville, FL Lima, OH New Haven, CT North Miami, FL Seattle, WA

These programs were begun by schools, health officials, and community-minded activists who know that education is the key to tackling the challenge of childhood obesity. The beverage industry believes in a balanced lifestyle too, so we are happy to help mayors promote better health for their citizens.

We can accomplish a lot when industry and communities work together, that’s why we are extending our partnership with the USCM for three more years. Check back in January 2016 to find out which cities are the latest to be recognized for their work and to get funding to do more of it.
